First Look: Avira 10 treads water. Think again. Games are what's driving online innovation--just ask Google, which is embracing them as fast as it can. At the Game Developers Conference (GDC) held in San Francisco's Moscone Center today, Google showed off advances in its Native Client (NaCl) and Pepper technology for Chrome that it hopes will drive more interest from developers and gamers alike in browser-based gaming. Google is also integrating NaCl games with Google to give the nascent social network something to play with. December the company unveiled a handful of NaCl-powered games last, and now it's ready to kick off several more big names to showcase Chrome's latest improvements. Colt McAnlis, Developer Advocate for Native Client at Google, said basically that it's game on for Chrome. We saw with Zynga that there was this gaming boom, but it competed with the mobile bubble. We want to see a modern gaming gold rush in the browser," he said in an interview between his presentations at GDC. Zombie Track Meet from FuzzyCube promises to be a madcap undead footrace. Changes in the roughest version of public version of Chrome already, called Canary, herald new capabilities for the browser. Starting around Chrome 19, currently on the developer's channel, or Chrome 20, on the Canary channel, users will be able to play games with full NaCl Google and support integration. Some of this groundwork has been laid in Chrome 18 beta's support for WebSockets. We're now having a really interesting discussion with game developers about how exactly Native Client gives them a really cool pivot point. . They just have to compile things differently," he said. Along with development progress in Native Client, continued work on HTML5 standards has created some new game-specific APIs. These include Gamepad, for playing games with a standard gaming controller; Fullscreen, for full-screen window support; and Mouse Lock, for 3D, first-person shooter-style mousing. Google is revealing six new games at GDC on Wednesday: Zombie Track Meet from FuzzyCube, AirMech, Eats to Munchies, Dark Legends, Ubisoft's From Dust, and Fire Hose Games' Go Home Dinosaurs, which McAnlis described as an improbable cross between Tower and Tetris Defense, but with barbecue and dinosaurs. Google has made improvements to its Chrome Web Store in-app payments option that include support for more currencies and a simpler payment path. This means that developers shall be able to monetize their games better, and it's going to include Google games. AirMech from Carbon Games is a real-time strategy game with transforming mech suits. 5 . Of course, Google has a long way to go before its nascent social network can rival Facebook, but the company is clearly betting on driving Google interest through Chrome's popularity. In Native Client, we've got the ability to expose what the hardware can do in a safe way, and we've got the games to prove it. For this year, we want some amazing success stories, focusing on Native Web and Client first," he said. Chrome 20, by the way, isn't due on the stable channel until sometime in June. NaCl development is currently far from complete. McAnlis said that while some areas are progressing, such as support for TrueType, SDL, and OpenAL for NaCl ports, the NaCl team is still working on better IDE, better break-point support, and more documentation. We want to get it so can you port a game to NaCl in one hour." Although McAnlis had originally told CNET that this summer's Google I/O conference would be the target for that, a Google representative has clarified that there is no current hard date for when a one-hour port process will be available. McAnlis stressed that his employer is serious about games, beyond its social networking or technological implications. This isn't a fad. Google is investing in games. Developers can bring console-quality games to Chrome," he said. It's an interesting gambit, and one which could help staunch the bleeding of user interest as persons flock to mobile devices. However, McAnlis added that there's no plans to bring Native Client to Chrome for Android since gaming software are already well-represented there. Atis Dvr-04Ae-A .Rar read more. Native Client's success and the rethinking of browser-based gaming would get a huge boost if another browser vendor such as Microsoft or Mozilla were to take a strong interest in the open-source technology, but that has yet to happen. Updated 12:05 p.m. PDT with a clarification from Google. . Because not everyone has a Nokia N95 or comparable luxurious 5-megapixel camera (including me,) most of us have to grudgingly accept our camera phones' variable output quality or take the time to fix images of emotional value. There are a ton of tips out there for increasing mobile phone images, and almost all of them involve a proficiency in advanced image-editing tools and a working knowledge of the parameters required for a dizzying number of tools. That's surely a fun challenge for digital photography enthusiasts of all levels, but what about those with limited time on their hands who just want a quick, reliable fix? Though subtle, the image on the right exhibits lighter smoother and corners, brighter tones. Compare the curtain noise, for instance. . Artifacts from JPEG compression are common problem spots. You've seen those choppy edges and gradients, and abundant digital noise. You've also no doubt noticed that contrast, sharpness, and color quality routinely suffer. There's always trying to eradicate them with an editing application built for mobile media, like Roxio Media Manager, which comes included in my BlackBerry desktop software. However, I found that neither the basic tools to or autocorrect photos adequately fixed exposure manually, saturation, and sharpness; nor did it reverse the glaring red-eye in individual or batch modes. The freeware iphone app Mobile Photo Enhancer performed much better. A laggy processor sometimes, the application even so improved picture quality, the smoothness and brightness of skin tones especially. Its basic tools did for some sensitivity in reducing noise allow, sharpening the shot, adjusting levels, and optionally doubling the image resolution. While the overall image quality improved, the iphone app once again failed on red-eye removal. mnprikaz there. Before editing, the subjects resembled demonic zombies. Brightness, saturation, and a combo of manual and automated red-eye correction reinstated the glow of health. Automated batch editing salvaged my photos enough to pass on to friends, but unsurprisingly, individual editing focused on problem areas of sharpness, contrast, and color saturation produces much better photos. Roland Xp50 . Favorite free editors from CNET Download.com include IrfanView, FastStone, and Paint.NET. The first step is getting contrast and levels in order. See if you like the looks of your program's auto-levels. If not, undo the change and start by tweaking brightness and contrast anew. I usually considerably amp up each. Next, I attack dullness by increasing the saturation, often by 5 to 10 units. This notably enhances skin tones and banishes that drained, vampiric matting produced by lit photographs dimly, but too much can make the subject looks candied. Most of the portraits that file out of my BlackBerry are hard hit by red-eye, which only some image editors are skilled at fixing. Rdio offering direct carrier billing through Verizon there. The freebies, on average, are not. In those full cases, zoom in on the optical eyes to hand-fix them with a pencil, brush, and color-picker tool. It adds a few minutes admittedly, but makes a major difference in the overall image by the right time you zoom back out. I follow up the whole procedure by lightly sharpening the image or the image edges if that's an option in the program I've opened. Oversharpening images can leave them grainy, particularly if they're again saved as JPEGs. The five-step process above is more involved than a one-click batch conversion considerably, but it will meet photography enthusiasts or perfectionists hardly. I'll leave you with an example of a more advanced technique that makes use of image layers and manual blurring, and invite you to share your own methods for improving camera phone photographs in the comments below. |
